Collagen
Collagen is a protein found in the second
layer of skin known as the dermis
(the first layer is called the epidermus).
It is injected under the dermis layer to
added fullness to areas of the face such as the lips, cheeks and forehead.
As part of the aging process, the body
seems to gradually decrease the amount of collagen that is stored in the
deeper layers of the skin. Disease or injury can also weaken the
collagen fibers that give your skin its underlying strength.
Purified collagen can be injected into your skin to supplement your own
collagen and actually fill certain lines and facial furrows or
"plump" up areas such as the lips. Collagen is likely to
last 3-9 months. It is important that the patient be tested for
allergic reaction.
