Collagen

Collagen is a protein found in the second layer of skin known as the dermis (the first layer is called the epidermus).  It is injected under the dermis layer to added fullness to areas of the face such as the lips, cheeks and forehead.

As part of the aging process, the body seems to gradually decrease the amount of collagen that is stored in the deeper layers of the skin.  Disease or injury can also weaken the collagen fibers that give your skin its underlying strength.  Purified collagen can be injected into your skin to supplement your own collagen and actually fill certain lines and facial furrows or "plump" up areas such as the lips.  Collagen is likely to last 3-9 months.  It is important that the patient be tested for allergic reaction.

BOTOX

Botox is a protein that weakens muscles that wrinkle the skin.  It is injected under the skin into areas surrounding the eyes, forehead and mouth to reduce "worry lines", "crow's feet" and "frown lines".  The procedure is quick and usually done in an examination room.

Fat Grafting

Among the newer concepts of aging is the idea that as we age we lose volume in our tissues and this leads to sagging.  Rather than trying to tighten the loose areas some surgeons are advocating refilling the tissues with fat.  Small volumes of fat can go along way in creating higher cheek bones and giving fuller lips.  The fat is obtained by syringe liposuction.  In the future we may see full face fat grafting replace face lifting in selected patients.
